Calvary Community Care and our Care Experts are committed to supporting our clients during this unprecedented time as we all face the challenges of managing COVID-19 (Coronavirus). We want to reassure our clients, their carers and families that Calvary is taking the necessary steps to review the way we operate. These measures ensure that we are adhering to the Commonwealth Department of Health recommendations to minimise the risk of spread of infection.

We understand that you, your carers and your families may have questions about how we are responding to COVID-19. We have provided information below, but please be assured that this will be revised as the situation changes and the Department of Health updates are provided. We have and will continue to align the care we provide with these recommendations.

By keeping our team updated of your own personal situation, we can continue to provide high quality care in a way that is safe for you and our employees. To ensure the safety of clients, your loved ones, and our staff, we will ask you a few questions before we enter your home regarding your current health status. We thank you for keeping us informed.

What is COVID-19?

It’s okay to get home care

The Commonwealth Department of Health has prepared an information sheet for people who have an aged care worker (e.g. Support Worker) visiting them at home.

The information sheet includes:
  • Information about personal protective equipment (PPE), and when it should worn by your aged care worker
  • How to protect yourself against COVID-19

The measures that we are taking to keep you safe

At Calvary, we have always delivered services with a focus on safety and quality, reinforced by the adherence of strict infection control procedures. This includes:
  • The washing of hands at the start and at the end of any service delivery in your home. You could support this practice by providing liquid soap and a clean/fresh hand towel.
  • Ensuring our team apply respiratory etiquette at all times. This means they will use a tissue or elbow to cover their mouth and nose should they need to cough or sneeze.
  • Ensuring that our team complete mandatory hand hygiene training annually.
  • All staff have completed mandatory training specific to COVID-19
  • All staff conduct a daily healthy check, and if unwell, will remain at home.
  • Ensuring our employees maintain a distance of 1.5 metres wherever possible.
  • Screening clients to identify those that pose a higher risk to ensure the safety of staff and other clients.

Should my Support Worker be wearing personal protective equipment (PPE), including masks?

We understand that you might be anxious about your Support Worker not wearing personal protective equipment (PPE), for example a mask. We base our protocols on the advice of the Commonwealth Department of Health on this matter.

Currently the advice is that Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) should only be worn when taking care of a client who is suspected of COVID-19 infection, has tested positive to COVID-19, or has respiratory or flu-like symptoms.

The use of masks in a healthy community is not recommended. This advice may change as the COVID-19 pandemic changes and Calvary will modify our actions accordingly.

Are you still providing your services?

Yes, we are continuing to deliver our services. We recognise that at this time, our clients need to remain safe in their own home whilst still receiving the care and support they need. Our services enable greater independence and promote positive health and well-being. We are here for you.

Calvary is also reviewing innovative ways to deliver our services. This will make it easier for you to remain safe at home and still receive the essential support that you need. Give us a call on 1300 66 00 22 if you have any suggestions how we can better support you.

We are implementing low contact services to ensure that you get the support that you need, for example, unassisted shopping, social support, and wellness checks. If you are interested in this, please give us a call on 1300 66 00 22 to discuss how we can provide these services, your current funding can be used to fund alternative services.

I would like to alter my services, what can I do?

We understand that people might be reluctant to receive home care services on their premises. While this decision is yours, Calvary Community Care is committed to providing you with the support that you need. We believe that, based on the measures we have implemented, consistent with the Department of Health advice, we can continue to provide you with safe, quality services.

Is Calvary testing our employees for COVID-19?

Calvary is advising all of our employees who provide direct care, that they should be tested if:
  • they have symptoms of COVID-19 or other respiratory illness; and/or
  • they have had close contact with a confirmed case of COVID-19.

Staff who are showing symptoms of COVID-19 will not be visiting our client’s homes or attending to duties in Calvary offices until test results are received negative and it is safe to do so.
